Laxmichhari Chairman held with gun

A team of joint forces comprising security personnel and police in a drive arrested Laxmichhari upazila parishad Chairman Super Joyti Chakma and seized an illegal firearm from his residence early Monday.
Apart from a foreign pistol, one magazine and five rounds of bullets were also seized from his house during the drive. Tipped off, a team of the joint forces raided the house of Super Joyti Chakma and arrested him along with one firearm and five rounds of bullets around 2:00am, Kazi Humayun Rashid, assistant superintendent (Ramgarh circle) of police, told a news agency.
According to the police and security forces in Khagrachhari, Super Jyoti Chakma had been intimidating locals using illegal arms. Police said he was arrested as he failed to show necessary document for possessing the gun and ammunition.
Super Jyoti Chakma is involved in the Chittagong Hill Tracts-based armed group United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF).
There are allegations against him of having connections with criminal activities in his area. Some more complaints about him include frightening people with guns to compel them to work for his group.
However, local people are afraid that Super Jyoti Chakma may further exploit and intimidate the residents of that area’s if he is released from the jail, according to a local resident who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The officer-in-charge (OC) of Laxmichhari Police Station said after the arrest Super Jyoti Chakma was produced before the Senior Judicial Magistrate’s Court which sent him to jail after rejecting his bail petition.
