13 more Myanmar BGP members take refuge in Bangladesh

Thirteen more Myanmar Border Guard Police (BGP) personnel have taken shelter in Bangladesh amid the ongoing conflict between junta forces and the rebel Arakan Army.

They crossed the Naf River and surrendered to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Teknaf on Wednesday.

In the morning, they sought refuge in the Nazir Para and Noapara border areas of Teknaf.

They fled due to the ongoing conflict between the Arakan Army and Myanmar’s armed forces in Rakhine State.

The information was confirmed during a press briefing at the Teknaf-Myanmar transit point in Jaliyapara, conducted by Teknaf-2 BGB Commander Lieutenant Colonel Mohiuddin Ahmed, with Major Ishtiaq Ahmed also present.

The BGB chief emphasized their vigilance to prevent any illegal border crossings and stated that the 13 new BGP members have been received.

This brings the total number of BGP personnel under BGB protection to 123. They will be repatriated to Myanmar soon.

He said that since 1963, there have been incidents of Rohingya migration from Myanmar. The BGB has maintained rigorous patrols along the 54-kilometer maritime boundary to prevent illegal crossings.

The situation along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border has been tense due to internal conflicts in Myanmar since November 13, 2023, prompting heightened border patrols.
