52 KNF suspects remanded in Bandarban

A court in Bandarban remanded 52 members of the Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF) for four days in connection with two cases involving bank robberies, firearm looting, and the kidnapping of a bank manager. The individuals, apprehended for recent criminal activities in the area, were presented in court under stringent security.

The Bandarban Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mohammad Nazmul Hossain, ordered the remand following a request for a five-day detention.

According to Bishwajit Singh, GRO of the court, 57 suspects were brought from jail; however, one pregnant woman was permitted interrogation at the jail gate, while four others were sent to jail.

On April 2, the group allegedly attempted to steal Tk 1.5 crore from a Sonali Bank branch in Ruma upazila, where they also kidnapped the branch manager, Md Nezam Uddin. The following day, they targeted Sonali and Krishi Bank branches in Thanchi upazila.

The incidents prompted visits by the Home Minister and top officials from the Home Ministry, security forces, and local administration.

To date, nine cases have been filed, and over 66 individuals, including the group’s chief coordinator, have been detained.
