Protesters celebrate government decision to ban Awami League activities

Hundreds of demonstrators on Saturday night (May 10) took to the streets in celebration after the interim government announced a temporary ban on all activities of the Awami League (AL), including its online presence, under the Anti-Terrorism Act. The ban will remain in effect until the completion of trials against the party and its leaders at the International Crimes Tribunal.
Protesters gathered in front of Hotel InterContinental near the Chief Adviser’s official residence, chanting slogans and holding processions in what they described as a “victory for the people’s movement.”
The celebration followed earlier protests demanding concrete action against the Awami League, which demonstrators accuse of involvement in crimes during the July uprising.
Earlier, Hasnat Abdullah, chief coordinator of the National Citizen Party’s (NCP) southern region, had announced a new programme titled ‘March to Jamuna,’ criticising the interim government’s delay in outlining a clear plan to enforce the ban.
In a Facebook post prior to the announcement, Abdullah wrote, “Despite the fall of autocracy through the people’s uprising in July, the interim government has yet to take effective steps to ban the Awami League.”
He also claimed that certain groups were attempting to discredit or fragment the movement. “Let it be clear—this movement belongs to no single party or ideology. It includes citizens from all backgrounds, along with political, social, and cultural organisations, united in one demand,” he said.
