Professor Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government, is considering stepping down, according to National Citizens Party (NCP) Convenor Nahid Islam, BBC Bangla reports.

Mr Islam met Yunus on Thursday evening at the state guest house Jamuna amid growing speculation about his possible resignation.

Speaking to BBC Bangla, Mr Islam said Yunus expressed frustration over the political situation and indicated he may not be able to continue under current conditions.

“He said he was brought in after a mass uprising for reform, but now feels under pressure and unable to work,” Mr Islam said.

He added that Yunus was “thinking about” resigning and might not stay if political parties fail to show trust or unity.

“I urged him not to resign,” Mr Islam said, citing national stability and the expectations of the people.

The development came as the BNP demanded the resignation of two government advisers and the national security adviser, accusing them of bias over the stalled swearing-in of BNP leader Ishraque Hossain as mayor of Dhaka South.

In response, an NCP leader warned that three other advisers — Asif Nazrul, Salehuddin Ahmed, and Wahiduddin Mahmud — may also face pressure to resign if reform promises are not upheld. They were accused of acting as “BNP spokespersons”.

Information Adviser Mahfuz Alam later issued a Facebook statement expressing regret for previous divisive comments.
