Priyanka Gandhi slams India’s UN abstention on Gaza, calls it ‘shameful’

Indian National Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has described the Indian government’s decision to abstain from a recent UN resolution on protecting civilians and upholding humanitarian obligations in Gaza as “shameful” and “disappointing,” India Today reported.

According to the India Today report, Vadra argued that the move marked a betrayal of India’s anti-colonial legacy and constitutional values, particularly as civilian casualties in Gaza continue to rise.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, she stated that the government had remained silent while over 60,000 people—mostly women and children—had been killed and the entire population of Gaza was being “confined and starved to death,” the publication noted.

She further alleged that India was “cheering on” Israel’s government as it launched strikes on Iran and killed its leaders, while continuing to ignore the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, according to India Today.

“It is shameful and disappointing that our government has chosen to abstain from the UN motion for the protection of civilians and upholding legal and humanitarian obligations in Gaza,” Vadra wrote, as quoted in the report.

The India Today article added that she called this abstention “a tragic reversal of our anti-colonial legacy,” claiming that India is not only remaining silent but implicitly supporting actions that violate international norms and sovereignty.

Vadra also questioned how the government could forsake the ideals of the Constitution and the values of India’s freedom movement, which once shaped a global vision rooted in peace and justice, the outlet said.

“There is no justification for this. True global leadership demands the courage to defend justice. India has shown this courage unfailingly in the past,” she stated in the post, according to India Today.

“In a world that is increasingly divisive, we must reclaim our voice for humanity and stand fearlessly for truth and non-violence,” she concluded, as reported by the news platform.
