We will win parliament too: Nahid Islam

The National Citizens’ Party, or NCP, says it is now aiming for change in parliament after what it calls a victory at Ganabhaban.

“Our goal on 5 August was the fall of fascism. Now, our goal is the reconstruction of Bangladesh,” said Nahid Islam, convener of the NCP.
“We targeted Ganabhaban before. Now our target is the National Parliament. We have achieved victory at Ganabhaban, and we will win the National Parliament too. The next election will be a celebration of youth victory,” he said.

He made the remarks at a street rally held Sunday evening at Saheb Bazar Zero Point in Rajshahi city.

Nahid also said that reforms and justice must come first. “We want to see the trial of Hasina. We want to see reform. We want to see a new constitution. This generation promises a new democratic constitution to the people of Bangladesh.”

Earlier in the evening, the NCP began a procession from the Railgate area. The march passed through New Market, Alkar Mor, Ganakpara, Saheb Bazar, and Alupatti before ending with the rally at Zero Point.

“We came to the streets with many dreams,” Nahid said. “My brother Abu Saeed stood in front of police bullets. Many from Rajshahi gave their lives. Our dream wasn’t just the fall of Sheikh Hasina—it was to rebuild Bangladesh through reform.”

He acknowledged past mistakes. “After 5 August, reform efforts were blocked by conspiracies. We admit we made mistakes, that we had limitations. But today we pledge—those mistakes will not be repeated. There will be no more chances for autocracy or dynastic politics. We will build a new system based on merit and capability.”

Nahid also addressed critics who see the July movement as purely emotional. “Those who say July doesn’t need constitutional recognition must be shown that on 3 August we will unite again against the Mujibist constitution. Those who deny July a place in the constitution are paving the way for Mujibism’s return. They have declared themselves its new guardians. We must resist them.”

Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain, Senior Joint Secretary Tasnim Jara, Northern Region Chief Organizer Sarjis Alam, Southern Region Chief Organizer Hasnat Abdullah, Northern Organizer Imran Iman, and Rajshahi Metropolitan Coordinator Md. Mobassher Ali also spoke at the event.

NCP Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary moderated the rally.

After the rally, the party also inaugurated its new city office in Ganakpara.
