NCP’s Sarjis visits Bandarban, local leaders unaware

Sarjis Alam, chief organiser for the northern region of the National Citizens’ Committee (NCP), visited three upazilas in Bandarban on Thursday, but local leaders said they were not informed of his trip.
Party sources said Alam arrived from Cox’s Bazar in the morning and travelled to Lama, Alikadam and Thanchi upazilas. He later left the Toma Tungi tourism centre in Thanchi for Bandarban town around noon.
“We had no information that he would be here,” an NCP Thanchi upazila joint secretary, seeking anonymity, told this newspaper. “We only came to know through intelligence sources after he left Thanchi for Bandarban.”
The leader said he understood the trip to be personal, adding that Alam may head to Chattogram or Dhaka. “There was no scheduled party programme in the district, so we did not pursue the matter,” he said.
Another district committee member said the trip was not discussed in a meeting held yesterday noon on a June 19 event. “We are treating it as a personal visit. I heard his family, including his wife, is also here,” the member added.
