Hill student Hema Chakma has declared her candidacy for the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election, pledging to promote inclusivity and protect student rights.
A fourth-year student at the Institute of Health Economics, Hema is the daughter of former Chenghi Union Parishad chairman Anil Chandra Chakma of Khagrachhari’s Panchhari upazila. She announced her candidacy through a post on social media, saying: “Unity in diversity, let DUCSU now be the life of pluralism.”
In her statement, she criticised the university administration for failing to ensure students’ basic needs in housing, food, health, transport and academics. She vowed to work for a “student-friendly environment” where student demands are reflected in decisions.
Hema, who has actively participated in campus movements including the July protests and the anti-rape campaign, also cited her involvement in awareness programmes on health insurance, campaigns against slut-shaming, and post-July graffiti drives.
Outside the campus, she has raised funds for flood victims, contributed to local school construction, and taken part in cultural activities. She has also represented Dhaka University in media, cultural events and international projects, while working with UNICEF, UNESCO, and the Malala Fund.
“I will remain uncompromising for the fair and logical rights of the university. Whether I win or not, my voice will remain raised on student issues,” Hema said, seeking support and cooperation from her peers.
