The Bangladesh Coast Guard has rescued six fishermen from a fishing boat that was sinking in the sea near Saint Martin’s Island in Teknaf.
Coast Guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Siam-ul-Haque confirmed the rescue to reporters on Monday.
He said a fishing boat named MV Abul Hashem had gone to sea on Sunday with six fishermen on board. On Monday, 25 August, at around 2 pm, the vessel began to sink near Shahpari’s Golar Char while returning from fishing due to strong waves and currents.
According to officials, a local fisherman alerted the Coast Guard by mobile phone when the boat started to go under. In response, the Coast Guard Station at Saint Martin’s immediately launched an operation.
Six fishermen were rescued alive from the area during the operation, Lieutenant Commander Haque said.
The Coast Guard provided the fishermen with first aid and food before handing them over to the boat’s owner.
Lieutenant Commander Haque added that the Bangladesh Coast Guard conducts regular operations to ensure security in coastal and riverine areas. He said such operations will continue in the future.
