Islami Chhatra Shibir’s vice president candidate Shadik Kayem has urged candidates and voters to act responsibly to ensure a free and fair Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election.

He made the remarks on Tuesday in response to a reporter’s question about alleged violations of the election code of conduct by a group on campus.

“Through this election, the spirit of the July Movement will prevail,” he said.

Sadik also called on students to back the candidates of their choice. “Through this election, we want to establish a positive democratic transition,” he added.

Earlier in the day, the Shibir-backed candidate cast his vote at the Udayan School and College polling centre around 08:30.

Polling began at 08:00 and is scheduled to continue until 16:00 across eight centres on campus.

According to university figures, 39,775 students are eligible to vote in this year’s election.
