A Bangladeshi youth was injured in a shooting during a clash between Rohingya refugees and a terrorist organization in the Ukhia Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazar.
The clash erupted early Tuesday morning in the Lumbashia Rohingya camp as the terrorist group pressured the Rohingya to join the ongoing conflict in Myanmar. The violence continued until 11 AM.
The injured man, Nurul Islam, 23, son of Syed Noor from the Kutupalong area of Ukhia, was taken to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for treatment. Several others, including police officers, were also injured in the skirmish.
Additional Police Superintendent Mohammad Wahid of the 14th Armed Police Battalion said the clash began when the armed group confronted the Rohingya refugees. Police fired blank shots to disperse the crowd, but the refugees retaliated, attacking the police and vandalizing a vehicle. Several officers were injured by thrown bricks, he said.
Asked, Wahid said he did not know how the local youth was shot.
He added that the situation is now under control, and police remain deployed in the camp.
Local Union Parishad member Helal Uddin said the clashes had been ongoing intermittently since Monday.
“Today (Tuesday), Nurul Islam was shot by police gunfire and taken to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital. We, the locals, are under threat,” he said.
