Six detained over army officer’s murder in Cox’s Bazar

The Bangladesh Army has detained six people directly involved in the murder of an army officer during an anti-robbery operation in Chakaria upazila of Cox’s Bazar district.

Lieutenant Tanzim Sarwar Nirjon (23) of the Bangladesh Army was killed in the early hours of Tuesday during an operation to prevent a robbery.

Following the incident, the army conducted a sweep operation in the area and arrested six suspects linked to the crime.

The detainees have been identified as Md. Babul Prakash (44), Md. Helal Uddin (34), Md. Anwar Hakim (28), Md. Arif Ullah (25), Md. Ziabur Karim (45), and Md. Hossain (39).

During the arrest, authorities recovered two locally made firearms, 11 rounds of ammunition, a knife used in the murder, a pickup truck, and a motorcycle.

Preliminary interrogations revealed that four of the suspects were directly involved in the crime, while the remaining two provided assistance by supplying information.

Among the suspects, Md. Babul Prakash is believed to have been the main financier of the crime and has confessed to stabbing Lieutenant Tanzim to death.

Other suspects, including the second-in-command of the gang, Md. Helal Uddin, driver Md. Anwar Hakim, armed member Md. Arif Ullah, and informants Md. Ziabur Karim and Md. Hossain, have also admitted their involvement in the incident. The army is continuing operations to apprehend other members of the gang.

The six detainees have been handed over to Chakaria Police Station, and a case is being filed by the army regarding the incident.

When contacted, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chakaria Police Station, Manzurul Kader Bhuiyan, said that no formal case has yet been filed in relation to the killing of Lieutenant Tanzim Sarwar Nirjon.
