Protesters briefly blocked the highway outside the US Embassy in Dhaka on Monday, prompting heightened security measures in the diplomatic zone.
Police and army personnel were seen stationed in front of the demonstration to prevent any untoward incidents. Protesters formed a human barricade along the road, halting traffic for some time.
Security forces, including members of the army, were deployed early in the day, forming a perimeter around the embassy. Officers were seen conducting body searches, and pedestrians were restricted from standing on sidewalks or roadways in the area.
Around 12pm, authorities reopened one side of the main road in the city’s New Market area.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Gulshan Division, Dhaka Metropolitan Police) Md Tarek Mahmud said, “Multiple layers of security have been deployed around the US Embassy. While there is no specific threat, law enforcers remain on high alert as a precaution.”
