Abrar Fahad deserves Swadhinata Padak in liberation war category: Farooki

Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki has said Abrar Fahad should get the Swadhinata Padak in the Liberation War category.

Farooki, in a personal post on Facebook on Monday evening, shared his perspective on the category in which Abrar Fahad should receive the award.

He added that this year’s Independence Award will be as distinctive as the Ekushey Padak.

Following the news of Abrar Fahad — a second-year student at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) who was killed inside Buet’s Sher-e-Bangla Hall by activists of the now-banned Chhatra League in 2019 —  receiving the award, many journalists sought confirmation of its authenticity.

In response to this, Farooki wrote: “Please be patient a little longer, and you will receive the full list. It will feature some extraordinary names.”

“Now, let me come to the main reason for writing this post. As Abrar Fahad’s name comes up, alongside the widespread praise from people of all backgrounds, I also see a certain group raising an irrational question: ‘On what grounds should Abrar Fahad be considered for the Independence Award?’

“Instead of explaining the rationale for the award, I want to highlight the category under which he should be recognized. That itself will answer why he deserves it. In my personal opinion, Abrar Fahad’s category should be Liberation War! The result of the Liberation War is independence. The key condition of independence is sovereignty. And Abrar Fahad was the vanguard of sovereignty.

“Abrar Fahad is a symbol. If you fail to grasp his strength, I urge you to go back to July. Listen closely to the hearts of the youth. The name you will hear in their breath is Abrar Fahad.”

Earlier, Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain announced Abrar Fahad’s Independence Award in a post on Facebook.
