Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Adviser Supradip Chakma has said that returning unused portions of additional budget allocations hampers development efforts and stressed the need to ensure timely and effective utilisation of the budget.

He made the remarks while speaking at a discussion marking the 27th founding anniversary of the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs, held at the ministry’s complex auditorium in Dhaka’s Bailey Road on 15 July 2025.

The adviser said the ministry was established on 15 July 1998, based on the need to implement the Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Accord and address the development gaps in the region. He called for accelerating both affirmative action and integration with the national mainstream.

Highlighting education initiatives, Chakma said the government plans to introduce e-learning in 100 schools in the region this year using Starlink satellite internet, under the directive of Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus.

He noted that construction of 40 hostels is nearing completion, and the establishment of schools, colleges, and residential facilities in remote areas has already contributed to a reduction in dropout rates and improved access to education. Special training programmes for teachers in English, mathematics, and science are also underway, he added.

Chakma expressed optimism that the progress in education would serve as a model for other underdeveloped regions and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building a peaceful, dignified, and developed Chittagong Hill Tracts through inclusive and participatory development.
