Army Chief urges December election, says corridor and port decisions belong to elected government

Bangladesh’s Army Chief, General Waker-Uz-Zaman, has said the country’s national election should be held by December, stressing that decisions on key national issues must come from an elected government.
Speaking at an officers’ address in Dhaka Cantonment on Wednesday, General Waker reaffirmed his earlier stance on the need for timely elections and underscored the military’s commitment to remaining neutral.
“The future direction of the country must be determined by a government elected through a legitimate process,” he said.
The event was attended by army officials from various ranks, with some joining virtually. A number of issues were discussed, including the upcoming election, cross-border corridors, port operations, and institutional reforms.
Corridor discussions must follow political consensus
Responding to a question about a proposed humanitarian corridor in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, General Waker said such decisions should come from a political government and follow legal procedures.
“Whatever is done must protect national interest and be based on political consensus,” he added.
Warning against mob violence
The Army Chief also issued a warning against what he described as “mob violence,” stating that the military is adopting a stricter approach to law and order.
“Disorder or violence in the name of public gatherings will no longer be tolerated,” he said.
Port management should involve public input
Addressing ongoing debates about foreign involvement in managing Chattogram Port’s New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT), General Waker said the opinions of local people and political leaders should be considered.
“Such decisions should be made through a political government,” he said.
No consultation on reforms
On the issue of institutional reforms, the Army Chief said he had not been consulted and had no information about what changes were taking place or how they were being implemented.
With Eid-ul-Azha approaching, he called for ensuring a safe and festive environment for citizens.
He reiterated the army’s commitment to upholding national sovereignty and instructed army personnel to maintain neutrality and carry out any electoral duties with honesty and dedication.
“We are cooperating with the interim government and will continue to do so,” General Waker said.
