The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Monday announced candidates for 237 parliamentary constituencies ahead of a national election expected in the coming weeks.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, a former prime minister, will contest from Dinajpur-3, Bogura-7, and Feni-1, the party leaders said at a press briefing in Dhaka’s Gulshan.

Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, who has been living in exile in London since 2008, will contest for the first time from Bogura-6.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is running in Thakurgaon-3.

The announcement marks the first phase of the BNP’s nomination process as the party moves closer to deciding its full slate of candidates.

The BNP has said it will participate in the polls while continuing to demand what it calls a fair and credible election under a neutral administration.
