The BNP has not demanded the restoration of the caretaker government system but sought an impartial role from the current interim administration during the next national election, Law Adviser Asif Nazrul said on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat, Nazrul said the matter came up during Tuesday’s meeting between the BNP delegation and the interim government.

“What I understood from the discussion is that the BNP did not ask for a caretaker government,” he said. “They said the interim government should act neutrally, like a caretaker government.”

The adviser said BNP leaders sought assurances that the interim government would remain neutral during the election period. He added that the government had already confirmed its neutrality, and Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus had personally guaranteed fairness.

Nazrul said the chief adviser would directly oversee all major administrative transfers and postings to ensure impartiality before the polls.

When asked whether the Council of Advisers would be downsized ahead of the election, he said no such issue had been raised. “It is a matter for the Council of Advisers. No party has made any demand to reduce its size,” he added.

Nazrul praised the army officers who appeared before the International Crimes Tribunal, calling it “a remarkable show of respect for the judicial process.”

“The manner in which the army members appeared before the tribunal and the cooperation extended by senior military officials, including the army chief, deserve high praise,” he said. “Their respect for the rule of law is very encouraging.”

Regarding the decision to keep the officers in a sub-jail, he said the matter was under the jurisdiction of the Home Ministry, which would take action it deemed appropriate.
