A 10-year-old schoolgirl has been hit by a bullet that crossed over from Myanmar at the Hwaikkyang border in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar.

The child, Afnan, is a fourth-grade student at Lambabil Haji Mohammad Hossain Government Primary School. She is the daughter of Jasim Uddin of the Techchibridge area in Hwaikkyang.

The incident occurred around 10am on Sunday, according to Lt Col Mohammad Zahirul Islam, commander of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB)-64.

Local sources said heavy gunfire had been reported for the last three days inside Myanmar, in the Totardwip area opposite the Hwaikkyang border.

They said a Bangladeshi fisherman was shot on Thursday amid the firing.

On Sunday morning, members of the Arakan Army allegedly crossed into Bangladesh while firing, and the child was struck by a bullet, locals said.

Soon after the incident, angry and panicked residents took to the road and staged a protest, demanding tighter security along the border and effective measures from the BGB.

Teknaf Police Station chief said they had received information about the incident and were looking into it. “Details will be provided later,” the officer-in-charge said.
