President Md. Sahabuddin has said that the Hill Tracts Peace Agreement will serve as a global exemplar for its peaceful conflict resolution.

He made this statement in a message delivered on Saturday (2 December), commemorating the 26th anniversary of the signing of the Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Agreement.

The President remarked, “On 2 December 1997, a historic agreement was signed between the government-established National Committee on Chittagong Hill Tracts and the Parbatya Chattogram Jana Samhati Samiti. This agreement, aimed at socio-economic development and establishing peace in the hill districts, marked the end of longstanding conflicts and set the course for peace. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s initiative in resolving conflicts peacefully will remain a noteworthy example worldwide.”

He further said, “The three hill districts of Bangladesh – Rangamati, Bandarban, and Khagrachhari – are bastions of natural beauty. The vibrant lifestyles, languages, and cultural traditions of various ethnic communities residing in these hills have distinctively enriched the region.”

On the 26th anniversary of the Hill Tracts Peace Agreement, the President extended heartfelt greetings and congratulations to all inhabitants of the hill areas.

He observed, “The Chittagong Hill Tracts, being abundant in natural resources, is a region brimming with developmental potential. In the wake of the peace agreement, the establishment of the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs and the Chittagong Hill Tracts Regional Council has expedited the socio-economic, infrastructural, and cultural progress in the area.”

The President also urged all stakeholders, irrespective of political affiliations, to engage with greater dedication and sincerity in advancing sustainable and rapid development in the hill districts.
