Dismissed teachers of the Rohingya camps staged a blockade on the Cox’s Bazar–Teknaf highway on Monday, demanding reinstatement to their jobs. They also began a hunger strike, vowing to continue until their demands are met.

Law enforcement personnel were deployed to the scene to keep the situation under control, while army members worked to clear the road and restore order.

The demonstration, which started in the morning of August 18, caused severe traffic congestion on the busy route. Hundreds of vehicles, including passenger buses and trucks, were stranded in the Kotbazar area, leaving commuters and drivers facing long delays.

The teachers warned that if reinstatement is not ensured immediately, the protests will intensify. “We will continue road blockades and hunger strikes until our demands are fulfilled,” they said.

Protesters alleged that they had long been employed in educational programmes in the camps under humanitarian agencies but were suddenly dismissed without explanation. With the loss of their jobs, they said, they and their families have been left in a state of uncertainty.
