Explosions from fighting in Myanmar’s Rakhine state have been heard on Bangladesh’s Saint Martin’s Island and Shahporir Island, causing alarm among residents, local officials said on Wednesday.

The explosions, which occurred on Wednesday as well as earlier in the week, were caused by clashes between the Myanmar military and the Arakan Army rebel group, sources said.

Plumes of smoke were also visible on the Myanmar side of the Whykong border, locals said.

The Myanmar military is seeking to regain control of areas in Rakhine state, including camps and outposts held by the Arakan Army, sources added.

“The situation on the island has generally remained normal, but the recent explosions have been heard,” said Akhtar Kamal, panel chairman of the Saint Martin Union Council. He added that the island’s isolation provides a sense of security.

Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer Adnan Chowdhury said authorities were monitoring the situation in Rakhine and focusing on assisting residents in Bangladeshi border villages.

Lieutenant Colonel Mohiuddin Ahmed, commander of the Teknaf-2 BGB Battalion, said “BGB patrols have been intensified along the Naaf River and the border to deter any potential infiltration.”
