An orphaned student from Bandarban’s remote Alikadam upazila is among five University of Chittagong students reportedly abducted in Khagrachhari, local authorities confirmed.

Langngi Mro, a second-year zoology student of the 2023–24 academic session, was identified as one of the victims. The others are Maitri Moy Chakma (Fine Arts), Rishon Chakma (International Relations), Dibbyo Chakma (Drama), and Aldrin Tripura (Fine Arts), all second-year students at the university.

The abductions reportedly occurred in Khagrachhari district earlier this week.

Langngi hails from Rengpu Nyadui Karbari Para in Kurukpata Union’s Ward-9, a remote village near the Bangladesh-Myanmar border. He lost his father last year and is the third among four siblings. His elder brother, a jhum cultivator, has been supporting his education.

Kurukpata Union Parishad Chairman Kratpung Mro said Langngi’s family had been informed of the incident. “It takes a full day’s trek from Poiamuhuri, the last accessible point by vehicle, to reach their home. The area is extremely remote,” he said.

“The Mro community is very worried. We demand the safe and immediate release of all five students,” he added.

No group has claimed responsibility for the abductions so far.

The Chittagong Hill Tracts region has long been known for sporadic unrest, including incidents of kidnapping.
