RAB arrests key KNF member in Bandarban for bank robbery and kidnapping

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested Sanju Khum Bawm, 38, a prominent member of the Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF), in connection with a series of violent incidents including a bank robbery and a kidnapping in Ruma, Bandarban, officials said on Thursday.

The arrest took place on Wednesday evening during a targeted operation in the Faruk Para area of Bandarban’s Sadar upazila.

RAB officials said that Sanju Khum Bawm is alleged to have played a significant role in a robbery at Sonali Bank and the kidnapping of its manager, along with looting arms and ammunition.

Md Abu Salam Chowdhury, Additional Police Superintendent and Senior Assistant Director of Law and Media for RAB-15, confirmed the details in a press release late Thursday.

Sanju Khum Bawm, president of the KNF’s Faruk Para chapter in the Sadar upazila, was apprehended with evidence linking him to the recent criminal activities, including ongoing communication and logistical support within the KNF, he added.

Following his arrest, Sanju Khum Bawm was transferred to Bandarban Sadar Police Station.

Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Jalil noted that Sanju Khum Bawm was already produced before court in connection with the bank robbery case. The court has subsequently issued orders for his incarceration.
