PARBATTA NEWS DESK
At least 49 people have been arrested over attacks and vandalism at shops and business establishments in Sylhet and other parts of the country during protests against Israel’s military actions in Gaza, police said on Tuesday .
The arrests were made in connection with incidents that took place on Monday, said Enamul Haque Sagar, assistant inspector general (Media and PR) at Police Headquarters.
“Cases have been filed, and legal proceedings are underway,” he told reporters.
Police are reviewing CCTV footage from affected businesses to identify and arrest others involved in the violence, he added.
On Monday night, Inspector General of Police Baharul Alam directed law enforcement to swiftly arrest those responsible.
“We have footage of the attackers. Identification and arrests are in progress, and police teams are already on the job,” the IGP said.
He added that while the government supports lawful protests, it will not tolerate criminal activities carried out in the name of protest.
