Iran’s Khuzestan Prosecutor’s Office has announced the arrest of 54 individuals accused of espionage and subversive activities allegedly connected to Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency, Anadolu Agency reported on Friday.
According to the prosecutor’s office, the suspects were “involved in supporting, gathering information for the enemy, propagandizing against the regime, as well as spreading falsehoods and rumors with the aim of damaging the country’s internal security and disrupting the psychological security of society,” Iran’s Fars News Agency reported.
Hostilities erupted on June 13 after Israel launched airstrikes on several sites across Iran, including military and nuclear facilities, prompting retaliatory missile strikes from Tehran.
Israeli authorities have said that at least 25 people have been killed and hundreds injured in the Iranian attacks, according to Anadolu Agency.
Iranian media, however, reported that 639 people have been killed and more than 1,300 wounded in Israeli strikes on Iranian territory.
