PCCP opposes use of ‘Adivasi’ term, warns against divisive policies

The Parbatya Chattogram Chhatra Parishad (PCCP) has criticised remarks by Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Adviser Supradeep Chakma supporting the use of the term “Adivasi” for indigenous identity.

In a statement issued on Saturday, PCCP said the adviser’s comments, made during a 23 June inter-ministerial meeting, contradict the constitution and could fuel ethnic division.

The group also opposed a draft ordinance that would rename seven cultural bodies as ethnic diversity institutes and appoint only small ethnic group members to their governing boards.

PCCP warned that such moves risk marginalising Bengali communities in the hill tracts and undermining long-standing coexistence.

It called for a ban on the official use of the term “Adivasi” and urged action against public officials who oppose state policy.
