Bangladesh’s security forces have detained a Myanmar national in Cox’s Bazar district with 340,000 yaba pills, officials say.

The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Md Omar Siddique from Kharangkhali in Myanmar, was arrested during a raid on Thursday morning in a Keora grove near Teknaf’s Sabrang area.

The operation was carried out jointly by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). Lt Col Ashiqur Rahman, commander of BGB Battalion-2 in Teknaf, said the raid was based on intelligence information.

“When one suspect attempted to flee, he was detained,” Rahman told reporters. “Later, we recovered 340,000 yaba pills from the site. Legal action is under way against the detainee and over the recovered drugs.”

He added that BGB and RAB are conducting joint operations to curb drug trafficking along the Bangladesh–Myanmar border. “The drug godfathers will be identified and brought to justice,” Rahman said.

Yaba, a methamphetamine-based tablet, is widely trafficked into Bangladesh from Myanmar and has become a major concern for law enforcement and public health. Authorities in Bangladesh have adopted a zero-tolerance policy toward narcotics smuggling, which officials say poses risks to national security.
