UN Special Envoy Noeleen Heyzer arrives in Bangladesh

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres’ Special Envoy for Myanmar, Noeleen Heyzer, has arrived in Dhaka on a four-day visit.

Her visit follows the recent visit by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet to Bangladesh.

She landed at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on a flight on Monday noon (August 22, 2022).

Ms Noeleen was received by Miah Md Mainul Kabir, director general of the Bangladesh foreign ministry’s Myanmar wing.

It is known that this special envoy of Guterres will visit Cox’s Bazar camp on the ground to see the plight of Rohingyas.

While visiting this very camp, Ms Bachelet stressed the need for the safe and secure repatriation of Rohingyas.

Like Ms Bachlet’s visit, Ms Heizer’s is also expected to increase pressure on Myanmar to take back Rohingyas.

According to diplomatic sources, Ms Heizer will have a courtesy call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during the visit.

She will also meet Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen, State Minister for Relief Enamur Rahman and Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen.
