Panic in Bandarban as gunshots heard from across Myanmar border

Residents near the Ghumdhum border in Naikhongchhari Upazila, Bandarban, were alarmed by the sounds of numerous gunshots coming from across Myanmar on Monday (22nd January) morning.

Local reports indicate suspected clashes between rebel groups near the border’s Pillars 35/36.

Nurul Absar, a resident of Headman Para, said bullets struck several houses and landed in the courtyard of Bhajabonia’s Syedul Haque, leading to the displacement of over six families to safer locations in Thaingkhali, Ukhiya.

In response to the rising tension, the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) have ramped up security along the border, according to sources close to the situation.

AKM Jahangir Aziz, Chairman of Ghumdhum Union Parishad, has issued instructions to UP members and village police to ensure the safe movement of residents near the volatile border.

Colonel Mohammad Saiful Islam Chowdhury, commander of the 34th BGB, sought to minimize concerns, labeling the gunfire as an internal conflict in Myanmar.

He emphasized that there is no immediate cause for panic and assured that the BGB is taking strict measures, including intensified patrols, to prevent any cross-border infiltration.
