Mine explosion at Ghumdhum border severely injures two

A landmine explosion planted by Myanmar between pillars 33/34 at the Tumbru border in Ghumdhum union, Naikhongchhari, Bandarban district, severed a young man’s right ankle.
The injured youth, identified as Nabi Hossain, also known as Sonaiya, 20, is the son of Habibur Rahman from Fakira Ghona, Ward No. 2, Tumbru.
The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 24.
Another young man, Mohammad Taher, 28, was also injured in the explosion. He is the son of the deceased Abul Hoshen from Hospital Para in the same village.
Shafiqul Islam, a member of Ward No. 1 of Ghumdhum Union Parishad, said, “I heard that two youths were injured in the mine explosion. However, I do not know when or why they went there.”
Local Union Parishad Chairman AKM Jahangir Aziz stated, “Two people were injured in a mine explosion at the border. They have been rescued and taken to the hospital.”
The injured were taken to the Kutupalong MSF Hospital in Ukhia. Due to the worsening condition of Sonaiya, he was transferred to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital. According to close relatives, the other injured man, Taher, is currently undergoing treatment at the Kutupalong MSF Hospital.
Local sources indicated that the injured individuals were involved in smuggling contraband goods to Myanmar and were caught in the explosion while attempting to bring in banned goods from the other side.
Mahfuz Imtiaz Bhuiyan, the in-charge of Ghumdhum Police Investigation Center, confirmed the incident.
“Two Bangladeshis were injured in a landmine explosion at the Tumbru border in Ghumdhum union. Locals rescued them and took them to the hospital for treatment,” he said.
