28 Myanmar BGP members seek refuge in Bangladesh

At least 28 members of Myanmar’s Border Guard Police (BGP) fled to Bangladesh early Tuesday, citing internal conflict. They crossed into Bangladesh through the Naf River’s Sabrang border point in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar, officials said.

Teknaf Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Md. Adnan Chowdhury reported that the BGP members arrived in a wooden trawler and surrendered their weapons to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) officers patrolling the border. Local authorities took the group into custody, but the exact number of refugees has yet to be confirmed.

“Early this morning, around 28 BGP members arrived through the Naf River’s Acharbania point in Sabrang Union, seeking refuge,” said Chowdhury. “They handed over their weapons and were taken into custody by BGB.”

Local representatives informed the administration about the incident, leading the BGB and Coast Guard to take further action.

Nur Hossain, Chairman of Sabrang Union Parishad, confirmed the arrival, noting that the BGP members fled with their weapons. The BGB placed them at the Domdomia Border Outpost (BOP).

Miah Md. Mainul Kabir, Director General of the Myanmar Wing of Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, acknowledged the reports of the BGP members seeking refuge but could not provide an exact figure. He stated that more details would be available after discussions with relevant authorities.
