Analyst questions prospects of Rohingya repatriation

PARBATTA NEWS ONLINE DESK

Security analyst Major (Retd) Emdadul Islam has said that no matter how hard Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus tries, he will not be able to repatriate “even five Rohingyas,” Jugantor reports.

Speaking to the newspaper, Emdadul Islam said, “No matter how much Dr Yunus tries, I do not think he will be able to repatriate even five Rohingyas.”

He added that the government’s tenure is already close to completion and more than 100,000 Rohingyas entered Bangladesh last year.

Jugantor reported that Emdadul Islam described recent developments in Rakhine.

He said the Arakan Army had temporarily captured parts of the state but Myanmar’s junta forces have since regrouped and resumed attacks.

Emdadul Islam also questioned the effectiveness of Bangladesh’s engagement with the United Nations.

Jugantor quoted him as saying that if Dr Yunus had managed to send the UN Secretary-General to Myanmar instead of bringing him to Bangladesh, there might at least have been an attempt to persuade Myanmar to agree to repatriation.

However, Emdadul Islam told the newspaper that such a move would not be realistic given the UN’s contested role in Gaza/

He added that confidence in the organisation has eroded internationally.
