Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman on Sunday expressed his vision of a peaceful Bangladesh, free from violence and hatred.

“We want to live together in peace, and we are always working toward that goal,” he said while addressing the foundation stone-laying ceremony of Sampriti Bhaban at the Dhaka International Buddhist Monastery in the capital’s Merul Badda area.

“Bangladesh is a country of harmony. For thousands of years, people of all religions, castes, and ethnic groups have coexisted peacefully. Today’s programme is a reflection of that spirit,” the army chief said.

He added that the event was not only about laying the foundation stone of Sampriti Bhaban but also about promoting unity. “We’ve also held a harmony rally here, where people from all religions, castes, and communities have gathered. This is the Bangladesh we want to see.”

Reaffirming the army’s commitment to religious and communal harmony, General Waker said, “This country belongs to everyone — Hindus, Buddhists, Christians, and Muslims. We want to uphold and protect that harmony.”

On the situation in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, the army chief emphasised peace and inclusivity. “We want peace to prevail in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, and we’re prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that. We want a country where peace and order reign — not violence and hatred.”

He also acknowledged that differences in opinion are natural and called for mutual respect. “There may be differing views, but we must respect each other’s perspectives,” he added.
