Army officer warns against mob violence after attack on GM Quader’s Rangpur home

Brigadier General Humayun Kaiyum has warned that arson and vandalism in the name of mobs will not be tolerated.
His remarks followed Thursday night’s attack on the Rangpur residence of Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader. The incident occurred around 8:45pm at his Senpara home, “The Sky View.”
In response, the army summoned several leaders of the BNP and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement for questioning around midnight on Saturday. All were released after interrogation.
Sarjis Alam, chief organiser (North) of the National Citizen Party (NCP), visited the scene after learning of the summons. He later spoke with Brig Gen Kaiyum, commander of the 72 Infantry Brigade.
“We are not going to promote anyone who acts against the country,” said Brig Gen Kaiyum. “Anyone who causes public suffering, engages in vandalism, or sets fire in the name of a mob – this group must be given a message: there is no space for this anymore.”
Following the meeting, Sarjis wrote on Facebook: “If the fascist collaborators are not arrested and the comrades of the uprising are instead embarrassed, we will meet again tomorrow on Rangpur’s streets.”
Speaking to reporters, he added, “For investigation purposes, anyone – from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, BNP, Jamaat, or NCP – can be questioned, and that is certainly necessary.
“But calling people at 1 or 2am gives the wrong impression. We expect such steps to be taken during office hours.”
