Bangladesh cancels $21 million deal with India’s GRSE for ocean-going tug

PARBATTA NEWS DESK

Bangladesh has cancelled a naval ship order placed with Indian state-owned shipbuilder Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), the company said in a filing to India’s stock exchange, BBC Bangla reports.

The $21 million contract, signed in July 2024, involved the construction of an ocean-going tug for the Bangladesh Navy. The vessel was scheduled for delivery within 24 months.

GRSE did not provide a reason for the cancellation. Bangladesh’s defence ministry has also not commented on the decision.

A senior official in Dhaka was quoted as telling BBC Bangla that they were aware of the cancellation but could not confirm when or why the decision was made.

Analysts say the move is in line with other contract reviews by the current interim government, which has reversed several agreements made under the previous Sheikh Hasina administration.

GRSE, a key supplier to the Indian Navy and Coast Guard, is based in Kolkata and has been operational since 1884.
