Election Commission suspends registration of Awami League

The Election Commission (EC) on Monday issued a gazette notification suspending the registration of the Bangladesh Awami League as a political party.
EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed confirmed the decision to reporters following a meeting of the Commission.
“This decision follows the notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs,” he said.
According to the gazette, the Ministry of Home Affairs, in S.R.O. No. 137-Act/2025 dated 12 May 2025, exercised its authority under the Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025 and Section 18(1) of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009 to prohibit all activities of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations. These include all forms of publication, campaigning, processions, meetings, conferences, and related activities in the mass media, as well as online and social media platforms.
The ban remains in effect until the completion of ongoing trials against the party’s leaders and activists at the International Crimes Tribunal.
In line with that decision, the Election Commission has formally suspended the Awami League’s registration (Registration No. 006, dated 3 November 2008) as a political party under the laws governing political party registration in Bangladesh.
