Former UPDF member shot dead in Khagrachhari

STAFF REPORTER, KHAGRACHHARI
A former member of the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF-Prasit) was shot dead in the Dumbil area of Chenghi union in Khagrachhari’s Panchhari upazila early Sunday.
The victim, Amar Jiban Chakma, son of Satyapriyo Chakma, was reportedly attacked by a group of unidentified armed men who entered his home around 1:30am and opened fire before fleeing, according to local sources.
Police said the body had not been recovered as of filing this report.
Amar Jiban had previously defected from UPDF (Prasit) to UPDF (Democratic) before eventually giving up politics and returning to a normal life, police added.
Various unverified reports about the killing circulated on social media throughout the day, but police have yet to confirm the details.
Angya Marma, district organiser of UPDF (Prasit), told reporters that Amar Jiban was no longer affiliated with the group and had been living a civilian life. He alleged that members of the JSS (Santu faction) were responsible for the killing, though this could not be independently confirmed.
“We’re trying to trace the body. Legal action will be taken if a formal complaint is filed,” said Panchhari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Jasim Uddin.
This is the latest in a string of violent incidents in the hill district.
On March 3, a woman named Ruposhi Chakma was killed in a shootout between JSS (Santu) and UPDF (Prasit) in Panchhari.
On March 19, UPDF member Sabi Tripura was killed and his sister Tarapati Tripura was injured in a terrorist attack in the remote hills of Matiranga.
