Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Saturday assured that the government will take all necessary measures to ensure the security of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman upon his return to the country.
“There is no apprehension regarding his security. We will arrange every possible measure to ensure his safety,” he said.
He made the remarks while responding to journalists’ questions after a Core Committee meeting on law and order at the Home Ministry in the Bangladesh Secretariat.
His comments come amid growing public and political attention surrounding Tarique Rahman’s return to Bangladesh.
Earlier, BNP Secretary General Fakhrul Islam Alamgir hinted at Tarique’s return during the opening session of the fifth day of the “BNP’s Plan to Build the Country” workshop in Dhaka on 11 December, saying the BNP leader would return “very soon” after 17 years of exile in London.
Tarique flew to the United Kingdom in 2008 for treatment hours after his mother and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s announcement that he would stay out of politics until he recovered fully.
According to his lawyers, a total of 84 cases were filed against him over the years since then. However, since 5 August last year, following the ouster of the Awami League government in a mass uprising, Tarique has been acquitted of all these convictions.
