Human trafficking: 26 Rohingyas rescued in Cox’s Bazar

Police rescued 26 Rohingyas, including women and children, who were being trafficked to Malaysia and Thailand via the Teknaf coast of Cox’s Bazar on Thursday, Jan 11, 2023.

The Rohingyas, living in different Rohingya refugee camps in Ukhiya and Teknaf, were rescued after conducting a drive at the home of Mohammad Shafiq in the Moheshkhali area in the upazila yesterday afternoon, reports our Cox’s Bazar staff correspondent, quoting Md Abdul Halim, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station.

Meanwhile, police arrested five brokers from the spot during the drive.

The Rohingyas gathered there following the assurance of the brokers that they would be sent to Thailand and Malaysia, OC Halim said quoting the victims.

Police also recovered Tk 42,000 from the arrestees, collected from the victims, during the drive.

The OC added that the human trafficking syndicate was under police surveillance for several days.

The Rohingyas were sent back to their respective camps.

Later in the day, the five arrestees were produced before a Cox’s Bazar court after a case was filed in this connection and the court sent them to jail, added the OC.
