In an anti-smuggling drive in Cox’s Bazar, police have seized 1,500 litres of fuel oil and detained Md Harun, a 30-year-old suspected smuggler. Harun, from South Dail Para in the district’s Teknaf, was apprehended during the operation.

The seizure and arrest occurred on Tuesday (December 12) near Marine Drive, south of Baharchhara Ghat in Teknaf’s Sabrang Union.

Muhammad Osman Gani, the Officer-in-Charge at Teknaf Model Police Station, confirmed the incident.

“Following intelligence about octane being smuggled from Teknaf to Myanmar, our team conducted a raid. We apprehended one individual, while approximately 8-9 others evaded capture,” Gani reported.

The police are preparing legal action and continuing their search for the remaining suspects. Additionally, two boats believed to be used in the smuggling operation were seized.

Myanmar’s ongoing conflict has led to an increased reliance on Bangladeshi goods among residents living near its border, resulting in a spike in smuggling activities, prompting the community in Teknaf to call for stronger border surveillance to tackle the issue.
