A young man has reportedly lost part of his leg in a suspected landmine explosion along the Naikhongchhari border in Bandarban.
The incident occurred on Wednesday evening inside Myanmar territory, near border pillar 49 at Lembuchhari in Dochhari Union, according to locals.
The injured, 20-year-old Mohammad Shahidullah, is the son of Badsha Mia from the Bahir Maath area of Lembuchhari.
Police said Shahidullah had crossed into Myanmar, allegedly to smuggle goods back into Bangladesh. The explosion took place as he was returning, and is believed to have been caused by a landmine planted by the Arakan Army.
“The blast severed his left leg below the knee,” said Md Masrurul Haque, officer-in-charge of Naikhongchhari Police Station, citing local accounts.
He was rescued by locals and taken to the Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
“He reportedly left the hospital after receiving primary care. His current whereabouts are unknown,” the police official added.
Authorities say they are investigating the incident.
