Yunus rules out extension, warns of Indian dominance

PARBATTA NEWS DESK

Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus has ruled out extending the interim government’s term beyond June next year and assured that national elections will be held by then.

Speaking at a meeting with leaders of 10 political parties on Sunday, Yunus said he had no intention of prolonging his authority or delaying the polls beyond April unless essential reforms require more time.

Nagorik Oikya President Mahmudur Rahman Manna, who attended the meeting, told reporters that Yunus expressed concern that his efforts could fail without broad political consensus. Party leaders advised him to engage more with political groups and share his plans for the election.

Yunus also warned of external threats, stating that “Indian imperialism wants to destroy us,” and called for national unity. He expressed disappointment over declining political cohesion but was reassured by leaders’ commitment to stand united on major national issues.

Addressing recent speculation, Yunus said he had no plans to resign. According to Manna, leaders told him the public does not support his resignation.

Yunus said elections could be held in December if limited reforms are needed, or in June if broader changes are required—but not later.
