STAFF REPORTER, KHAGRACHARI
In Mahalchari upazila of Khagrachhari, a shooting by a rival faction resulted in the deaths of two United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF-Prasit) members and left another injured.
The incident took place on Wednesday (January 24) around 7:30 AM in Dugom Durschari, Mahalchari Upazila, where attackers fired indiscriminately at a residence, resulting in two immediate fatalities.
The victims have been identified as Rabi Kumar Chakma, aged 65, and Shanta Chakma, also known as Bimal, aged 52.
Confirming the incident, Angya Marma, the UPDF-Prasit faction’s Khagrachhari district organizer, said three UPDF members, Rabi Kumar Chakma, Shanta Chakma (Bimal), and Rohintu Chakma alias Tipon, aged 32, were at the residence during the attack.
The assault led to the deaths of Rabi Kumar and Shanta Chakma, while Rohintu Chakma remains unaccounted for, he said.
Angya Marm has blamed the Thengarehra group for the attack.
He sharply criticized the attack as cowardly and reprehensible, pointing fingers at the UPDF Democratic for orchestrating the killings.
The UPDF Democratic, on their part, has refuted any involvement in the incident.
Md. Nasir Uddin, officer-in-charge of Mahalchari Police Station, said that police were immediately dispatched upon receiving the news. However, due to the challenging terrain of the area, they have yet to reach the site.
