The process of repatriating Myanmar soldiers who had fled across the border is underway, the head of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has announced.

A total of 177 Myanmar soldiers are currently in Bangladesh and will be returned in a process that has already begun, said Maj Gen Mohammad Ashraful Islam Siddiqui, the BGB’s director general during an inspection of border facilities in the Ramgarh area on Friday.

He also spoke about the economic potential of the new Ramgarh-Sabrang land port connecting Bangladesh and Myanmar, saying it would bolster trade and create new avenues for economic development.

He emphasised investments in the port from countries like Japan and expressed confidence that it would significantly boost the economy under the Prime Minister’s leadership.

Addressing concerns about security in the hilly terrain, Siddiqui assured that adequate measures have been taken around the BGB ICP at Ramgarh, with similar arrangements in place on the Indian side.

During his visit, Siddiqui paid homage to the legacy of the BGB and its role in Bangladesh’s history. He noted that the force’s origins trace back to the ‘Ramgarh Local Battalion’, founded in 1795.

He paid tribute to the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and all martyrs of the Liberation War, specifically commemorating the sacrifices of BGB members.

The BGB director general alsoparticipated in a food distribution program for the underprivileged and emphasised the force’s commitment to humanitarian work alongside its border security responsibilities.
