Army seizes ammunition, devices from UPDF hideout in Rangamati

The Bangladesh Army seized ammunition, communication devices, and other equipment from a hideout of the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) (Main) in Rangamati’s Kaukhali, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Friday.

The operation, conducted early in the morning based on intelligence, targeted a regional armed group linked to UPDF (Main), ISPR said in a statement.

“During the operation, an army patrol discovered a secret hideout of a UPDF (Main) group. Sensing the presence of army personnel, the miscreants quickly fled the scene,” the ISPR statement said.

A subsequent search recovered 17 pistol rounds, a pair of binoculars, a walkie-talkie, a hard disk, uniforms, extortion receipts, and other items, it said.

UPDF (Main) attempted to disrupt the operation by mobilising tribal women to stage protests and reclaim the seized items, ISPR said.

“Despite such provocative actions, the army exercised utmost patience and professionalism, successfully bringing the situation under control,” it said.

ISPR also noted that law enforcement agencies of a neighbouring country recently intercepted several consignments of arms and ammunition belonging to armed groups from the hill tracts. The incident was reported in local media.

“The army will continue its operations against all regional armed groups who threaten peace in the hill tracts and pose a risk to national sovereignty,” ISPR said.
