Bangladesh election date still unclear, says CEC

Bangladesh’s Chief Election Commissioner A M M Nasir Uddin says the date for the next national election has not yet been decided.

In an interview with BBC Bangla, he said it was difficult to confirm when the vote would take place, as the Election Commission has not been formally informed of a date.

“It’s very difficult for me to respond because I don’t know the exact polling date,” he said. “It is being suggested that it could happen in the first half of April, but we haven’t been officially told.”

He added that the government has not given the commission a specific timeline, and they are working on the assumption that the election may be held either before Ramadan in early February or in April.

The CEC said preparations had initially begun with December in mind, based on earlier remarks from the chief advisor, who had mentioned a possible timeframe between December and June.

Nasir Uddin said he started planning after hearing the chief advisor’s speech to the nation on 16 December last year, in which the possibility of a December or June election was mentioned.

He also confirmed that no timeframe was given during his appointment, but he proceeded assuming that an election would take place and began internal planning with his team.
