BGB repels Rohingya infiltration attempt from Myanmar

Nine Rohingya people attempting to enter Bangladesh from Myanmar by boat were turned back by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Thursday.

The interception took place around 10 am at the Shah Porir Dwip jetty in Teknaf, located in Cox’s Bazar, as part of Bangladesh’s efforts to manage its border amid ongoing regional tensions.

In recent days, the area has experienced a notable decrease in conflict-related disturbances. “For the past three days, there has been an absence of gunfire or explosions on the southeastern side of the border, offering some respite to the local populace,” said Lieutenant Colonel Md Mohiuddin Ahmed, commander of Teknaf-2 BGB.

He noted that the intensity of conflicts between the junta and rebels in Myanmar’s Rakhine state appears to have diminished near the Bangladesh border.

Despite the calm, the situation remains tense due to the ongoing strife within Myanmar, prompting continuous patrols by the BGB, Coast Guard, and police.

“Since last Monday evening, the situation at the border has been relatively normal,” Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Adnan Chowdhury confirmed, emphasising the continued vigilance in response to the conflict within Myanmar.
