Marking the 28th anniversary of the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) Peace Accord on 2 December 2025, Supradip Chakma, Adviser to the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs, extended his sincere greetings and congratulations to people from all walks of life in the region.

In a message sent to the media, he recalled that the historic Accord – the peace agreement signed between the government and regional political representatives on 2 December 1997 – ended a long period of conflict, distrust and instability, and opened a new phase of peace, harmony and development in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.

He stressed that the Accord was not merely a political compromise, but a solemn commitment grounded in the principles of peace, coexistence and justice.

That commitment, Supradip Chakma said, was made with full and unwavering allegiance to Bangladesh’s sovereignty and territorial integrity under the country’s Constitution, and has helped accelerate the journey towards building a more inclusive and equality-based Bangladesh.

Looking back on the 28 years since the signing, Supradip Chakma said the government has been working steadily to implement the core goals and objectives of the Accord. As part of this process, and through administrative decentralisation, the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs, the Regional Council and the three Hill District Councils have been established, providing a stronger foundation for a participatory governance structure for the people of the region.

He noted that significant progress has been made in sectors such as education, health, agriculture, electricity, communication, information technology, socio-economic development and tourism, with initiatives ranging from bringing modern e-learning facilities to remote areas to improving living standards on an equitable basis.

The government, according to the adviser, is also making sustained efforts to implement development plans aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals.

To make this development trajectory sustainable, Supradip Chakma emphasised the need to further strengthen a culture of mutual trust, cooperation and harmony.

He expressed his firm belief that if all communities in the Chittagong Hill Tracts move forward together, while respecting each other’s traditions, cultures and ways of life, the region can truly become a model of peace and progress.
